Councillor for Shoreham

Email brian.coomber@adur.gov.uk

Brian Coomber has been married to Janet my wife for 37 years. He attended Hove Boys Grammar School.

Brian says "We have two grown-up sons. Whilst we both grew-up in Hove, we chose to live in Shoreham-by-Sea after getting married. We met whilst singing in the choir of the Old Parish Church of St Andrew Hove.

My career was spent with an international bank, spanning local services, junior and management staff training, implementation of new systems, presentations at international conferences and marketing initiatives.

I travelled England and Wales extensively as part of Management Services and spent four years extending the popularity of the bank’s credit card. Within marketing I dealt with undergraduate services, negotiated with national companies and trades unions to implement cash-less pay and controlled sponsorship and the publicity for prestigious events such as Bonnington’s Everest Expedition and the Royal Windsor Horse Show. The introduction of cash machines was part of my brief together with the setting up of the Personal Banker network. Whilst commuting from Shoreham to London I used the travelling time to study for an honours degree in humanities.

I took early retirement and became involved with a number of charities locally. I have been with Adur Talking News for some fifteen years, producing tapes & C.Ds. for the blind and partially sighted. I was fortunate to be able to call upon experience gained from producing and compering ‘Fanfare’, a classical music magazine programme on the old BBC Radio Brighton.

I have been a local councillor for nine years and am currently completing my second term as Chairman of Adur District Council. I write regularly for the Shoreham Herald on matters of local and county interest. I have been involved with the Old Shoreham Tollbridge restoration and I am a council representative on the committee of the Marlipins Museum, where I have been able to deposit a number of locally important artefacts.

My interests include singing, opera and musical theatre together with fine arts. I have a special interest in art for public spaces and the conservation and renewal of important historical places in our community. I am the council representative on Shoreham Renaissance Committee,

Gardening and garden design are my hobbies together with walking the seashore and the Downs.''

Dave Simmons

Councillor for Sompting & N Lancing

David Simmons and his family have lived in Adur for 38 years and their children and many of their 12 grandchildren have attended local schools so he has a keen interest in ensuring adequate resources are in place for our community, especially young people.

Dave says "As a sitting District Councillor for Cokeham Ward since 2006, I have been active in supporting not only my ward, but also the whole community of Adur. I have held positions as Chairman of the Licensing Committee and Vice-Chairman of Planning, as well as being a Cabinet Member, leading for the council on community health and well-being; voluntary organisations and local partnerships, working to make Adur a safer place for children and young people.

As West Sussex County Council provides many local services, effective links are essential. As a cabinet member I already work at county level and argue for more resources to tackle local priorities. As a County Councillor I would be even better placed to influence critical county decisions and ensure a fairer distribution of funds to tackle our areas of greatest need.

With a background that includes chairing West Sussex committees, national experience in the voluntary and community sector and as an assessor on partnerships for Government, I can bring a great deal of experience to the role of County Councillor.

One of my main interests is music, and I belong to Shoreham Chamber Choir; run a vocal quintet and sing in St. Nicolas Church Choir in Old Shoreham. I have been Vice-Chairman of Southern and later, Sussex Crimestoppers as a volunteer for 11 years and engage in other fundraising activity for voluntary organisations.

She says "I am married to Keith and have lived on Lancing Beach the past 14 years. I could not live in a better place; it’s like being on holiday all year round.

Upon leaving school my first job was as Junior Clerk to the then Mayor of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, not realizing that many years later I would hold that position myself, in Adur.

A Publican, Adult Education teacher and Café Owner are just some of the things I have done over the years, all of them dealing with the general public, which I enjoy very much.

The charity I have supported for a long time is the NSPCC and I now hold the position of Vice Chairman to the South & Mid Sussex branches.

At Adur Council I hold the position of Chairman of Development & Control (formerly Planning) and Vice Chairman on the Licensing Committee. I sit on the Standards Board and represent Adur on the South Downs Joint Committee, Adur in Partnership and the Harbour Committee.

Hobbies I enjoy are crossword puzzles, sudoku, knitting, sewing, people watching and, if there is any spare time left, reading.

I want to improve the quality of life for you all by trying to achieve economic and social improvements to this part of the South East. Please let me be your voice, regardless of your political persuasions, let me help you in any way I can, no problem is too big or too . There is so much more to do. This is why I became a Councillor.''
